First Female President of the Philippines Tribute: Cory Aquino ▼

I watched the late former President Cory Aquino’s funeral procession last August 5, 2009. It lasted for 9 hours with the 4 honor guards escorting her casket not moving during the whole period. Discipline at its best. Let me tell you what’s all the hulabaloo about when most of us were just babies during her term.

I was born on June 5, 1990, the 4th year of her term as president and I had no ability to create lasting memories yet so I didn’t understand what was happening. I only had to confide with my parents who for some reason weren’t sharing the same enthusiasm as the others. Why didn’t they want to go to the burial of Corazon Aquino despite the weather? Surely it would have been great to have been a part of history and march along with the hundreds and thousands (est 200thousand people but I think it’s close to 500 thousand) of people. But I realized that during her term, 7 coup attempts were made, blackouts were prominent (VERY they stressed) and investors backed away from our country during her term. It wasn’t even that good then, so WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

Freedom. That’s what. and humility and faith.

For those who are not familiar with Philippines history, Ferdinand Marcos was the president before Aquino and his reign of 21 years (1965-1986) of presidency brought economic success but corruption at the same time. The Marcoses (especially his wife Imelda) were notorious for spending the national treasury (our frigging MONEY!) for their own use and they used this to excel in arts thus the many concerts and theatres here. When Martial Law was declared on 1972, the dark ages for the Philippines occurred because of the lack of democracy and human rights. People were scared… people died… people got killed… Who was to step up and fight against this corrupt family?

Benigno Aquino became the symbol of hope for the people when he decided to fight the Marcoses but alas, he was soon assassinated (by Imelada they say!) and the nation was in uproar. Corazon *Cory* Aquino, the widow was then looked up to by the people as the next successor. Doubt formulated in her heart and she sought faith and guidance in the Lord. It took 20+ hours of praying when she finally decided to run against Marcos.

Thus the famous 1986 EDSA Revolution began. It was the first successful peaceful revolt the whole world has seen. Hundreds of Thousands of men and women and children, nuns and priests, soldiers, marched into the streets to EDSA and fought the government not with sticks and stones, but armed with rosaries and prayers and blessings. Mrs. Aquino led this huge revolt to a victory that the Filipinos had not tasted ever since the revolution against the Spaniards in 1898. FREEDOM WAS REGAINED! Yellow was the Aquinos color and the L-shape hand signal stood for Liberty.

She was a symbol of hope for the people. She became a sort of ‘Mother’ for the country and even after her term, she continued being present in politics with her moral guidance and faith. She was there when EDSA Revoltion II happened. She immortalized the Philippines in the textbooks of the world. With her unwavering faith, she survived the 7 coup attempts and never backed down from her position as president. She did not become a Marcos.

We owe our freedom to the one who stepped up and that is the late President. It is so important to know the meaning and significance of the procession and death of Cory because I am sure that young ones would not understand it. Why, they would also ask, is she so important. We have lost someone great to us and we might not see another one like her in our generation. As I watched the rites last August 5, I couldn’t help but feel gratitude for even just a moment. It was a very heartfelt funeral and procession. I leave you guys now with a endearing Filipino song ‘Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo’ (The Gift of the Filipinos to the World) sung by the Apo Hiking and Leah Salonga and other Filipino artists. My favorite song of the day….

My Human Life experiences: I Spent my Good Times in Prison ▼

I FINALLY GOT TO EAT KRISPY KREME!! :P Now that I’m offically a hundred percent well, I could finally dig in to my favorite doughnuts and further eat bad and fatty foods! Oh how wonderful life is right? But sadly dad got gout in his knee and he couldn’t do my Krispy Kreme photo shoot entry now…

I was supposed to blog this last Sunday but I couldn’t conjure the right words for this event. Last Sunday, I was able to attend the exposure trip to Bilibid Prison.

Why did I go? I received letter from a US inmate around 2 years ago. I received a letter addressed to me (HOW THE HECK DID HE GET MY ADDRESS AND NAME????!!!) and how he wanted me to write back and that he wanted a friend. He paid dearly for his sins and other things I forgot. Dad wanted me to write back but mum refused. I wasn’t able to…. so.. I sort of thought that this would be a help.. in some way

So now I could do something. Do one of the beatitudes of the Lord “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” I took this opportunity and had the most unique experiences of my life!

I never knew that Bilibid prison…looked more like a village than anything else. They had tennis courts, classrooms, library room, recreational centers (of course the conditions aof these are not that good..) Inmates are required to retake or take high school and college degrees (they only teach Marketing Management). They are actually quite talented people as they have a band with AWESOME vocals (they sang Bohemian Rhapsody for crying out loud), and they have a College Guild Choir and acting chops too!

These people may seem happy though… but once I got to interact with them one on one… you realize that spending 15 years here isn’t exactly what they want… as the speaker said, nobody ever wished to do something end up in prison bars. They’re trying to reform and they’re finding new ways of livelihood through crafts. I bouhgt a handmade scented candle with an image of Mother Mary and a shirt! Love it! There are plenty more, like ships in the bottle, plastic bottle-made decorations and plants, paintings and more!

These people cry… almost every night and ask pardon for their wrongdoings. I do hope that they are really sincere… that they have changed. I actually believe that people living outside bars are scarier than those inside. Or maybe an average Joe is the most likely person who can become a wrongdoer but I hope not… i hope not…

No pics allowed inside the prison (actually no gadgets allowed) so I leave you with a funny segment of a Filipino comedian (he speaks that way for effect and comedy. lolz) and his tour in Bilibid. It’s in English so you guys can all watch it! :P

I also saw a dude doing a suicide attempt on the way home that day… He was climbing and already at the top of a 20 meter high lamp post at the bridge and firefighters were trying to convince him to go down. Ambulances were there too… I sincerely hope he didn’t push through with it…

gosh.. that was a long short post.. hahaha. it’s quite hard to explain. anyhow, i didn’t know you had such respect for former Pres. Cory Aquino… i kind of felt sorry and a bit guilty after reading that tribute part because i didn’t care to watch the funeral, and even getting angry when my dad would turn the channel to the broadcast. ouch heehee.

and.. how the heck did that prisoner got your name and address?! o_O it’s somehow weird and scary. i’d never been to Bilibid, i don’t wish i could pay a visit, but i also can’t say that i don’t want to. hehehe. like you said, it’s a unique life experience. also, congratulations to your blogging success. hope you earn more to save more! and that you use those savings for meaningful and rewarding things. wee and maybe someday… get to buy those cute finds online. :haha

i’ve been looking for good movie downloads, and it’s making me crazy! dedz i watched the Where The Wild Things Are trailer, and I CAN’T WAIT! :(( hahaha. anyway, thanks for sharing the video, i wouldn’t have seen it if not for reading your post.

I never knew either! Haha really I had no admiration for her dati, pero after taking Theology class and then required to write a paper about her and her faith, napaisip talaga ako. Who is Pres Cory Aquino I asked myself.

Wow, congrats with the blogging advertisements! I wish I could do it, but most of them consist of being 18 years old, which I am not…yet.

*Former Pres. Cory Aquino is really an amazing person. It’s very true because a lot of people really went to her funeral and the public viewing during the wake. O_O I was even more impressed with the four honor guards. LOL. They were not moving in the entire procession! OMG. :3

hello I love the way you do this post.. It was so good to witness how people love cory and it was so good to witness such thing sa funeral na never pa natin nakikita before like ninoys death. pres cory has been one of the most respected president sa pinat as well as abroad.. Im glad that I was able to watch the funeral even if its online. i love crispy kreme lalo na ung bagong luto fresh from oven madami ganyan dito eh ung fresh from oven pag 3pm ba yun.. di naman lahat nasa bilibid ay masama they have their own reason and sacrifices why they have commited such crimes,my lil sis will love that piggy charms..

“The aunt of Philippines” sounds like a extraordinary woman. Freedom fighters of all kind warms my heart. And surviving seven coup attempts is amazing!

I have to admit that I don’t know much about The Philippines but it sounds like you’ve had a long and hard way towards democracy.

Agreed! I couldn’t imagine someone surviving one… lest 7!!! Yeah, really hard march to democracy. Did you know that we were colonized by Spain first in 1500s and then only “retrieved” the freedom back in 1898 but it was more like Spain made a deal with America so we were very Americanized now. Then World War II came and the Japanese constructed a puppet government and did horrible things to the Filipinos. After the war was the only time we really got freedom. History is kinda weird and wacky you know. hehe And then I don’t really have Filipino blood, i have Chinese-Spanish-Portuguese so this is a very weird lineage and then I’m living in the Philippines. Really complicated stuff.

Yah actually same ung pagkamahal ng Europe and Japan but I like Europe more because of the places you can go to at once. Japan is kind of small pero I really want to go there rin. Wahh am conflicted na!! Yah, IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!! hehe

I was really saddened by the death of Cory Aquino, even though I don’t remember much about her during her presidency because I was born on ’88 and I was only 4 years old when her term ended. She was indeed a great person and tama nga ung sinabi mo that “We have lost someone great to us and we might not see another one like her in our generation.”

i only watched cory aquino’s funeral procession on TV, bilib talaga ako sa mga guard na yun, 8-9hours din yun, dapat ni-catheter nalang sila. hehe..

hindi rin ako aware sa mga nangyari nun, ang alam ko lang kasi siya yung namuno para labanan yung mga marcoses. hmp..

di pa ko napunta sa bilibid, pero nung nagreview ako sa review center, may nagpunta dun na nag sell ng mga stuffs from bilibid.

naka $222 ka sis? whoa! laki naman nun, share naman dyan kung ano ginawa mo. hahaha.. ako nga kalahati palang nyan. hehe..

same here, nagshop na din ako online, first time ko pa, yun nga lang wala pa sakin, siguro end of august ko marereceived.

Wow. I’m extremely embarrassed right now – I knew nothing about the history of the Philippines! Then again, I doubt many people know about the finnish history. Not that there’s much to know though We haven’t gone through your history at school and apparently I don’t learn enough history online – so thank you for sharing this information about the revolutions and about Aquino

Well, that wasn’t so long! LOL and I like reading anyway so I didn’t mind very much! It was a good idea to do the link thingy though. Much more organized and easy to read.

As for Cory Aquino, I was born in 1988 and didn’t remember a lot Although my mom cried a lot during the procession [we were only able to watch on TV] and regaled me with a LOT of stories. My parents were part of the revolution, and my grandfather was part of Ninoy’s funeral march. So my mom was really really emotional and instilled in us the value of what Cory Aquino did. This is not to say, of course, that nothing good happened during Marcos’ term in office. It’s just that they put a higher value on democracy and freedom.

A friend of mine’s biological father is in prison [she's living with her adopted family in another country now] and we used to visit him a lot. Contrary to popular belief a lot of them are really nice. My mother hates me and my friends because of this, but I really don’t see anything wrong with making friends with them. They’re a lot of fun, and they share so many lessons to us! It’s good to know that you got a lot from your exposure.

I wish I could earn from my blog too, I was actually earning form my old blog, but some circumstances didn’t allow that to continue so now I’m doing my best to keep my blog active so that I can earn from it in the future. Even if I know very very little about blogging.
Oh Lord online shopping! I used to be sooo addicted, now I’ve curbed it since I don’t have a job and I have so many things to do here at home and can’t go online very much. But those HP stuff look sooo cool, I can relate even if I’m not much of a HP fan, I was trying to guess which one you got but there’s nothing “Panda” there so I just gave up! Whoops! LOL !

Whew that’s such a long post Tiff but your entries are always interesting to read anyway, especially those pictures/videos you share with us Cory will definitely missed by the Filipino people and i’m proud to say that i’m a fellow Kulasa of hers. She makes me even more proud as a Filipino (and as a Kulasa) coz of her really good deeds and her being a good leader and all.
