New Year, Old Me, New Me

I’ve always thought that I was a bit quadri-polar. I always imagined that there were 4 mes inside of me and we would be arguing amongst ourselves who was really right, who was the dunce, etc. But then I thought, maybe I just talked a lot to myself…

So anyway HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! Welcome 2013! If you’re reading this right now, let me just give you the highest five of fives and let’s dance around to celebrate that we have defied all the odds and survived the apocalypse. Hurrah! Isn’t it exciting? We get another clean slate to do whatever our hearts’ desires.

But I kind of started this entry with more than 1 self for a reason. I realize that starting a new year doesn’t mean forgetting your past or even your old friends, most of all your old self. Actually your old self is still with you right? I mean after all, the only difference between 2012 and 2013 is just a second, a minute. This is why I love the Scottish poem/song Auld Lang Syne so much.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

It’s like the song’s telling you to not forget your past. New year is all about toasting to what had been and I think also, cheering for the what will be. The New Year is a reminder for us how wonderful the past years were. They might have come to past and they might be over, but with the lessons we’ve learned from them, we hope that the new year, will be as good to us/or even better than then. Let us rejoice over our triumphs. And let us not forget our mistakes.

This is why I dang love history!

Okay a random thought suddenly spouted out of nowhere. XD

2012 has been such an extremely, incredible AWESOME year. I can’t highlight it enough. I graduated with honors, got great jobs, earned independence and gained great friends. I feel like I want 2012 to go on forever, but who’s to say I can’t? What I can do is to thank for the past year and pray to God that 2013 will be as good to me.

I wish these things for 2013:
1. Good health
2. Great relationships
3. Ripe wealth
4. Awesome adventures
5. New, better soul (hopefully I find it!)

I actually have a lot of things in store for 2013 or actually it’s the other way around. 2013 definitely holds a lot of good fortune and surprises for me. I normally don’t do New Year’s Resolutions since I think you can challenge yourself ANY DAY of the year. But having an occasion to cement this resolution, actually helps in getting it.

Tiff K’s New Year’s Resolutions 2013
1. Be more patient
2. More time with family
3. Lose weight (lose like 15 pounds XD)
4. Eat more healthy stuff
5. Strive harder in work
6. Experiment more with cooking
7. Maintain my blog and projects
8. Finish 50-book challenge once more (and read more classics and non-fiction!)
9. Watch more films and try to create some as weel
10. Replace all gadgets in house (3 phones down, 1 phone and 2 laptops and 1 pc to go D8)
11. Travel with a hungrier heart (and stomach).
12. Learn a new skill (like knitting or something!)

I think that’s it for now. Maybe I’ll add more to these resolutions. :)

OH! And I would just like to present my Top 10 books that I’ve read in 2012. Please do read my reviews here and I greatly greatly recommend them all. These are all 5-star books for me as they made me laugh, cry, angry, hysterical, confused and so much more. It’s an experience reading these books… definitely a great experience :) http://www.goodreads.com/user_challenges/212210

In no particular order…
1. Habibi by Craig Thomas
2. The Art of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein
3. Maus 1&2 by Art Spiegelman
4. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami
5. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
6. Ethel & Ernest by Raymond Briggs
7. The Fault in Our Stars by John Greene
8. How’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
9. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

What are your 2012 highlights and 2013 resolutions?

Can’t wait to rock 2013 with you guys! A BLESSED NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Geeks Will CTRL The World

Being a geek is cool you know

Life is full of unsolved mysteries. One of the most baffling for me though, is why so many people are still offended by the idea of someone calling them a geek. No seriously, I don’t get it. Sure, back in the 80s and 90s a geek was seen as someone who was a little too intelligent, with interests which should never be spoken of aloud. They were grouped together to be made fun of by the people who were branded ‘cool’.

Times have changed though. The nerds and geeks of the world run this joint. All the cool gadgets that are loved the world over, were created by clever people with geeky imaginations and a lot of drive to succeed and prove themselves. While the Average Joe was playing Cheekybingo, avoiding doing their work and going out socialising every night, geeks were out changing the world.

The result? Being a geek in the 21st Century may still be a niche area, but it’s a lot cooler. Why?

Well, for starters the internet was invented. Information is power in the age of the internet, with widespread knowledge conveniently at our fingertips. Those who understand the way modern technology works, has the power to turn this knowledge into currency and make more money than the average spender. Those who do not use the internet are left behind. Who created the internet? The sci-fi loving, Middle Earth dwellers who understand computer coding better than they do the English language, and wish they could go to Hogwarts and build their own robot. Not necessarily in that order.

In short, being a geek is something to be celebrated. So if someone refers to you as a geek in future, and you’ve never considered yourself one before, be flattered. It’s a compliment. They’re telling you you’re an intelligent person with a lot of interesting quirks about you, which make you the awesome person you are. Superhero worship and all.
